2007 Knockout Cup Winners
History
Formed in 1993 from two summer teams, Sherwoods, and The Church of God who both played only summer football friendlies. Founding members were Stephen McCloskey, the clubs first manager, Stephen McKinney, the then manager of Sherwoods, Chris McCloskey, and Alan McCloskey. The name Riverside Athletic was taken from the not long opened Riverside park in Ballymoney, Co Antrim. Entering the Hutchinson Tiles Winter League for the 1993/94 season the clubs first venture into the world of organised football didn't go well, finishing bottom of section B in what was then a two group league. Remaining in the same league the second season went little better, again finishing in lower reaches of one of the groups, although they did reach the semi finals of the Hutchinson Tiles Knockout Cup, going out to eventual winners, Coleraine Olympic. Season three was better with the club finishing third as the league format changed to a one tier league. Season four saw the club finish top of the league and reach the final of the Knockout Cup, and Bob Mullan Motors Shield, only to be denied success because of player registration irregularities. After the disapointment of season four the club pulled out of the league only to re-enter the season after, with Gerald Kinnaird and Stephen McCloskey at the helm. This partnership, coupled with an influx of new players, saw the club win a League and Cup double. The 1998/99 season brought a second league and cup double triumph, with the feat being replicated 2000/01 and 2001/02, becoming the first team to win back to back "doubles". The last club success came during the 2006/07 season when they won the Hutchinson Tiles Knockout Cup for a record fifth time, and in doing so became the joint most successful team, along with former members Ballymoney Foods, ever in the history of the league. A detalied breakdown of the clubs success can be found by clicking on the roll of honour tab on the menu bar.
